Black ‘Feminist’ Men & Pedestals
I feel like…
a lot of the time, ‘conscious’ black men emerge, and they read all this and that about race and gender, and feminism, and womanism, and sexism, and misogyny.
And they take these narratives, and they create a pedestal for black women to sit on,
and they say things like ‘We need to honor our women, our sisters.’
(Except it’s always in relationship to men - mothers, sisters, wives… but never black women on their own merits - never like, queer women of color)But in creating this pedestal, they’ve created this image in their head of what a black woman should be, like, natural hair, and womanist and they have to have a certain politics, or they have to speak a certain way, or they have to read certain authors, or they have to listen to certain music.
And then they just shun and shame the black women who don’t fit into the artificial mold they created. They get mad at black women in interracial relationships, or they shame them for not wearing their hair natural, or SOMETHING. They get mad at black women for listening to Nikki Minaj instead of Lauryn Hill or something. They want every woman to be Alice Walker, or Erykah Badu or Claire Huxtable.
That’s still misogyny though.
yes it is.
